When my husband and I were moving into our new house, I remember being careful about not shattering our CDs. Today we’re thankful to have iPods and other devices for music instead of clunky CDs. Although the technology of music has changed, its affects have not. For me, music sparks up nostalgia and takes me back to a place in time where I can remember certain events in my life; old friends and places I’ve traveled. Music has been around me since I was inside my mother’s womb listening to the rhythm of her heart.
It didn’t surprise me when my husband and I began to have a stronger connection through music when we were dating. The sound of Mariah Carey and Luther Vandross took our emotions to new heights when we listened to them together. By the same token, we learned a little bit more about each other’s personalities based on our musical tastes. He’s a big fan of the 90’s with a library of popular bands such as: Jodeci, Boyz II Men, SWV, and TLC. I could tell he was more modern than I was when it came to music. When he thumbed through my collection, he saw artists such as: Earth, Wind, and Fire, Phyllis Hyman, Teena Marie, and Stevie Wonder, and he assumed I was probably mature for my age and a little old-fashioned. He was right!
We did share similar tastes in many artists, including Rock/Pop singers such as: Hall & Oats, George Michael, and Madonna. With rap music, we shared a plethora of artists from the East to West Coast. We played our favorite songs by Tupac, Biggie, A Tribe Called Quest, Salt n’ Pepa, and we were amazed at how we remembered the lyrics by heart.
If you’ve ever read my books, you’ll notice that I include songs to arouse my readers’ emotions. I believe music is a necessary ingredient to keeping our lives in motion. Music is the art of sound that heals us, entertains us, and inspires us. I can’t imagine life without it.
